NATIONAL AVIARY OF COLOMBIA
It's the perfect place for ecotourism, but also a research center that seeks not only to conserve birds, but also to breed them.
There are currently three breeding programs for endangered or threatened birds:
- Blue-billed Curassow (Crax alberti), a species endemic to Colombia;
- Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), the country's emblematic bird;
- and Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja), the most powerful bird of prey in the world.
The birds that live in the Aviary come from, among others, the country's Regional Autonomous Corporations, which, due to illegal wildlife trafficking, keep them.
Others come from exchanges between zoological institutions and many others from their reproduction 'in situ'.
